On May 5th, 2024, members Ryan Argenti, Rhiannon Cahoe, Gabriel Keller, Jacob Biondo, Grace Dauch, Gabe Pena, and Anthony Haberman along with their advisor, Dr. Greg Blumberg, deployed to the Great Plains. Over this two-week period (5/5-5/19), their goal was to launch Windsonds into supercell thunderstorms collecting environmental data on tornadogenesis. With observational data from these launches, their hope is to gain a better understanding on pre-storm, during storm, and post-storm environments surrounding tornadogenesis.

Team TILTTING is currently making preparations to deploy on our first Northeast mission of the season tomorrow, June 26th.

Due to varying levels of spread and uncertainty in the guidance, our team has decided not to pursue the incoming storm setup next week. There were a few factors behind our decision:
New RM Young anemometer build

The forecasting team is keeping a close eye on the global models, particularly next week from the 11th of June to the 16th. Models are providing indications of a developing trough during this time period in the Central United States and Southern Great Plains. Due to the variability in these model outputs, final decisions for deployment will be made closer to the end of this week.

The RM Young Wind Sensor car mount has been built and additional accessories will be installed Friday June 9! To secure the mount, a roof rack will be attached to the mount to allow for easy attachment and removal. The sensor is rated to handle up to 224mph wind gusts.
TILTTING opened up to university meteorology department

Project TILTTING opened its doors to meteorology students at Millersville University in early April 2023, with the goal of revamping the team in advance of the upcoming chase season. The project committee set out to find new members that are not only passionate about severe weather, but are driven and committed to advance our knowledge on tornadoes and contribute to the field of meteorology.

Student presentations at 103rd Annual AMS Conference

At the start of 2023, Millersville University students traveled to Denver, CO for the 103rd Annual AMS conference. Among the students were members of Project TILTTING, presenting on several topics that included the development of a prototyped instrument, methodology and strategies for the project, a case study involving a QLCS storm, along with an overview of the project.

As the remnants of Hurricane Ida moved through the Mid-Atlantic, a tornado outbreak unfolded across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with one of the strongest tornadoes touching down in southern New Jersey.
